Rangoli Vegetarian Restaurant

Image
This is a pure vegetarian restaurant that has really delicious food.  I was invited here for the Monday Thali Madness . Every Monday they have unlimited Gujrati thali for AED 23. The thali had 2 types of dal, kadhi, corn spinach, gatte ki sabzi, and potato sabzi. Apart from that there was a samosa and dhokla, a chaat (bhel), and two sweets. They also get you hot phulkas and puris. Gatte ki sabzi was delicious, and the dals too. I really enjoyed the thali a lot. Apart from that we also tried a few chaat items here.  We started with the pani puri , then we had the sev puri which was on the spicier side and really good. We also tried the dahi puri which was nice.  I especially liked the samosa chaat that I had here. The chole in it was lovely and the samosa had a nice taste to it too. At the e...

Swades - Indian vegetarian snacks

Image
It was a weekend and we were looking for a quick bite so we ended up going here.  It's not a very big place but they have a good variety of options on the menu. We started with the aloo cheese onion paratha . The cheese in the paratha was melted and we couldn't see the cheese in it. We asked for more, and they were happy to give us some extra cheese. The taste of the paratha was quite good.  I ordered a dahi kachori chaat , and it was really flavourful with ample amount of dahi in it. The ragda pattice too was good enough. I would have liked the pattice itself to have more flavour but nothing to complain about.  Last, but not the least, we had a nice cuppa chai .  The service is fast, and the staff is friendly.  Our server got us the bill without asking for it, which I didn't quite like.  Click here for delicious food and lovely places around Dubai.

Virpur - Gujarati street food

Image
Missing the desi Gujarati street food? Here's a place that will satisfy your cravings. It shares its name with the town that it comes from - Virpur. It has started very recently and they invited me for some lovely street-food.  The all time favourite gujju thing to munch on is the fafda and gathiya . They make these fresh here, and when you have it with the various pickles and chutneys, you are sure to miss home.  Then we had the chips sandwich . The chips refer to the french fries just the way people know it back home. It is available in an open version and as a roll too. I really liked both of these. You can ask them to have it made extra spicy if you like.  If you're a fan of cheese (who isn't?), then the cheese garlic pav is something that might interest you. The ample amount of cheese in this garlicy bread is what keeps you going at it.  One of the best comfort food is the Pav Bhaji , and of-course we had to try it out here. This...

Dosa & Dhokla

Image
This place has a catchy name since it is a combination of two famous dishes from two different states in India. Both the dishes are loved by me and my family, and especially since my folks are vegetarian, we decided to give this place a shot.  We ordered quite a variety of food to taste a bit of everything.  I'm usually a fan of fusion dosas or some new versions of dosas, so I ordered a spring roll dosa . The good thing is that it was served pipping hot, and the chutneys and sambar with it tasted delicious.  The filling inside the dosa was just okay though; it was a bit sweetish.  I think you could order a regular dosa or a more conventional south Indian dish and you might like it.  The next item we had was the khaman dhokla . You get 4-5 pieces with 2 chutneys - the sweet tamarind one and the mint one. The dhokla was good to taste, but not something one would eagerly look forward too. It was a tad bit dry for our liking.  Then we ordered ...

Akshar Pure Veg Restaurant

There are quite a few vegetarian restaurants coming up these days and some good thali places too. I did not know about this one earlier until the time I was searching for it online and I stumbled across it. Apart form thali, they also serve a la carte.  This one is located at the far end of Rolla Street.  They have their own parking, though not exactly valet. Their guy came with me in my car and showed me the way to their parking area which is located behind the building. The spot where I parked was a bit stinky and after parking there we entered the restaurants through their kitchen. This wasn't a very pleasing initial experience; though it is better than having to find your own parking on a crowded street.  They have an different menu everyday for the thali and the same is updated on Zomato on a daily basis. We ordered the Gujarati thali which costs AED 42, and has more items compared to the punjabi thali which is for AED 32.  We went there on a Wednes...

Rajdhani Street - Indian street food with a twist

Image
Rajdhani is more than food; it is an emotion.  Rajdhani Street is a concept where they have Indian street food to which they've added a twist. They have a huge selection of items, and especially Gujarati dishes.  I was invited here to try out their food, and we just felt like ordering everything. The dishes looked so innovative and tempting.  We started with the bakarwadi chaat . Who would have thought about taking one of our favourite dry snacks, and making a chaat from it. This was crunchy, and had the goodness of chaat to it; beautifully presented in a shovel. Definitely recommend trying this one out.  Next we had the paanki which is a traditional Gujarati dish, and you get it at very few restaurants. I can loosely describe it as a steamed rice pancake. It comes wrapped in a leaf, and you can have it with chutney. This has a mild flavour to it, and if you want to try something new, you should order this.  An item that got me bowle...
