Zawyet Maryam

Image
Zawyet Maryam is a Middle Eastern restaurant in JLT. It literally translates to Maryam corner. It has an earthy feel to it and I was invited to try out their food.  There is a see through kitchen and a lovely seating area which looks spacious. Look carefully, and it isn't all that big but still bigger than most restaurants in JLT.  We started with a manakish. They have various kinds and they recommended the Maryam special manakish . It has cheese, olive, and parsley in it. I always think of manakish as being an open one (like a pizza), but this was closed (like a sandwich). It was nice and cheesy, and combined with the olives and the parsley it definitely tasted pretty good. It did feel a tad bit dry after a few bites.  We then moved on to one of their sandwiches  - the chicken and garlic sandwich . The filling inside was really good, and it tasted nice too but the bread was a bit thick for our liking and it felt dry. Perhaps they can give garlic sauce and / or mayonna

Memsaab - Umm Hurair

Image
This particular outlet of Memsaab is located in Healthcare city, and is a pretty small one. It has seating for about 10-12 people. I was invited here to try out the food.  They got us a welcome drink when we got there. It was the jal jeera - a bit tangy than what I've usually had.  For starters, they recommended us the Lucknowi mutton kebabs . They looked quite good, and did taste nice too, although a tad bit dry. Had a nice flavour to it. The next one was the honey chilli potato . It looked really tempting, was crispy, and tasted delicious. I do like mine to be a bit thicker though but I did enjoy these.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Famished Explorer [ UDIT ] (@uditss) on Jul 27, 2019 at 5:49am PDT For our drinks we had the salted lassi and a fresh lime soda . We asked for the latter one to be made salted but it was sweet and salt mix when it was served. The lassi was good enough and so was the fresh lime soda. For o

Wagamama - the Greens

Image
Wagamama is one of my all time favourite for Asian food. The food is really good, and easy of the pocket too.  For some refreshing drinks we started with the Yuzu lavendar ice-tea , and a strawberry mango ice tea.  The Yuzu has mild flavours which I personally like, although it does taste a bit different than the commonly available ice-teas.  The strawberry mango is an interesting combination. As you must have guessed, it is tangy, although fruity and refreshing.  Their ramen bowls looked tempting, and we ordered the chilli chicken ramen . It is a big bowl which can be easily shared among two people unless that's the only thing you're having. Bean sprouts, onions, chillies, lemon, noodles, and well-cooked chicken. We really liked this dish.  The other one is a curry which is my favourite here, and I almost always order it when I go there. It is the Surendra's curry . I was told that it is named after one of their staff members in U.K. who invented it. We

Ketli Cafe

Image
Ketli is one of those place which gets easily missed if you're passing by. I rarely noticed it despite driving by a few times. This time I was invited to try out their seasonal Mango Mania festival. I'm sure you love mangoes, so keep reading. Even if you're one of those few who doesn't, there are the regular non-mango dishes too, so keep reading 😛 It is not a very big place, but they've done it up pretty well. There are some plant and other artsy decorations around the place, and some hilarious signboards too! We started with some mango lassi . Not too sour and not overly sweet either. It was really good.  They also have the mango shake which looks similar but I liked this much more. It was thick and sweeter, and hard to resist. Definitely try it out if you're going there.  For snacks, we had the paratha (roll). There was the aloo achari paratha and the chicken achari paratha . The taste of achar (pickle) was prominent though not over-powering

Cafe Bazza - Kuwaiti food

Image
This is a restaurant located in citywalk, but not the regular side; it is near to the newly opened coca-cola arena. It was a bit confusing to find parking, but I did find a parking space eventually.  The restaurant serves Kuwaiti food and it was my first time trying it.  While my food arrived, I had a fresh strawberry juice which was refreshing. They have an egg section from which I had wafra farm eggs . These eggs are cooked, with tomato, onion, and cream cheese. It did sound really interesting and looked appealing when served. The tomato onion sauce tasted delicious, especially with the cream cheese. The eggs though were overcooked, and were a bit hard. I tried one of their mini tanoor options. The staff recommended the mini halloumi tanoor . For those who don't know, it is like a min sandwich made with a very thin Kuwaiti bread. Apart from halloumi, there are vegetables like lettuce, tomato and more. This tasted better than what I was expecting. It was fresh, and

MotaFish - South Indian seafood

Image
Motafish a small restaurant in barsha. It's a south Indian restaurant that is known for their seafood. They invited me to try out the food.  We started with an interesting drink - sambharam . I was thinking it has something to do with sambhar, but that wasn't the case at all. It is buttermilk that is spiced. It has green chillies, curry leaves, ginger, and herbs in it. It was a bit different from the masala chhaas that I'm used to having usually. This one was a bit spicier, not on the tongue but on the throat. It was nice for a change.  For appetisers, they suggested us the Natholi fry . These are anchovies marinated in a spicy masala and fried. These were crispy and the masala made them taste really good.  Another Kerala speciality that they recommended was the Kerala Chicken fry . These are chunks of chicken (which look boneless but are not) that are marinated in their secret spices. This tasted a bit dry and was just average.  We definitely wanted to try

Grub Shack - Indian fusion

I've been wanting to go here since a long time but due to some reason I never ended up going, until this day when a friend of mine invited me here.  The place really has a nice vibe to it. They had live music on the Tuesday when we went. The tables and chairs have an earthy wooden feel.  We started with some of their mocktails. They first got us the jack frost . This is basically a virgin pina colada but light blue in colour, served with smoke around it. I love pina colada and I liked this even better.  The other one was the mango chili and this blew my mind. It had a nice consistency to it; wasn't too watery or toot thick. The chili definitely added that kick to it.  For appetisers, we started with the double dragon king prawns . These prawns were huge, spicy, and crispy. The sauce that it was prepared in gave an Indo-Chinese flavour to it. Being a fan of prawns, I could barely keep my hands off it.  View this post on Instagram A post sha
