Mohalla - Indian casual upmarket diner

Image
I had heard  good things about this place and went here on the suggestion of a friend. The ambience is casual yet gives an upmarket feel to it.  The menu isn't extensive but they have some interesting items. We started with the poha crusted prawns . The name itself was so interesting. It looked nice when it was served and it was exactly what the name suggests - prawns that are coated with poha and are crispy. The texture was great and so was the taste. It was served with an orange chutney. I'm not the kind who'd generally have vada-pav at an upmarket restaurant; I prefer it at small roadside eateries, but on the suggestion of my friends, we ordered a vada-pav . It was actually good. It had chutney inside, and was served with chillies and some salad on the side.  The next starter that we had was the avocado papdi chaat . This was similar looking to sev-puri but with avocado in it. It was a bit too sweet for our liking. For my beverage, I had masala chaans and was nice and...

Khau Galli

This is a small vegetarian place in JLT that invited me to try out the lovely street food that they serve.  Look at the designer glasses.  We started with their chole bhature bites . The word "bites" made us think that this might be a small portion size, but it the quantity was ample. The bhature although were more of the size of puris. The taste of the chole was really nice, and we enjoyed it with the mini bhature. Chaat is one of our favourite street foods, and we were confused as to which one to order, so they suggested their chaat platter . It comes with pani puri, sev puri, dahi puri, vada pav, and a small tokri chaat. The pani puri was pretty good, but the rest of it was average. I was expecting better. Pav bhaji fondue has become a common offering lately, but to find it in this small eatery was a pleasant surprise. The pav is basically broken into small pieces. Here it was also sprinkled with spices which added onto the taste. We dip...

Kebab Korner

This restaurant has some nice kebabs as well as live music with dance.  I was invited here to try out the food.  We started with the palak soup and it was creamy and really delicious.  They have some nice kebabs and we started with the murg hazarvi kebab. The texture was nice but the garlic was over-powering.  The hariyali tikki was prepared well and I liked the flavours that it had to it.  We then had one of their paneer starters made with a green marination and coated with a lot of cheese. This tasted really good. I don't remember the exact name though.  The lamb seekh kebab looked interesting, but could have had a bit more flavor to it.  For the mains, we started with the murg lababdaar which was tangy as well as rich and flavourful.  Then we had the paneer chatpata which was another tomato based gravy which had a creamy consistency. The paneer was soft. For the mutton, we had the laal maas wh...

BBQ delight - Ibn Batuta

This place serves a la carte as well as buffet which is for AED 79. I was invited to try out the food here.  I chose the buffet since that's usually the choice for most of the people. The selection was not bad, though their other branch had more varieties.  We started with the mutton seekh and the chicken seekh kebab . Both were pretty good and well cooked.  The fried prawns and the fried fish tasted alright. The fish could have been a bit softer.  The chicken achari boti was pretty good, and so was the chicken malai tikka .  The mutton ribs were chewy and I didn't like them.  They got us some pani puri which was pretty good. The pani was a bit zestier than usual.  There was the papdi chaat too. The flavour was not bad, but the yoghurt was not mixed well. It was there mostly just on top, whereas the chaat felt a bit bit dry towards the end.  We had the fresh mango juice and the lemon mint ; both of which were rea...

The Yellow Chilli by Sanjeev Kapoor

Image
The Yellow Chilli is a restaurant by the renowned chef Sanjeev Kapoor, and the dishes here are his signature ones, so they have a bit of a twist to them, and are a little different than the ones you'll have in most Indian restaurants.  I was invited to this restaurant nestled in JLT, to try out their lovely food.  We ordered some soups to start with, and as we waited, they got us some papads to munch on.  I ordered for the prawn pepper rasam . This was something I had for the first time and I really loved it since it tasted just as the name suggested. There was rasam, with pepper (which was a lot), and there was prawn. Since we were sitting outside, and the weather was cold, it complemented it very well. Also, since I love spicy food I enjoyed it, but I'm pretty sure it would be too spicy for most people.  My friend ordered the vegetarian makai shorba . This is as soup containing corn. It was totally different from the sweet corn soups, or most of the c...
