As You Fish

Image
This is not just another sea-food outlet; this place has some other dishes apart from the regular ones that you'll see.  They've just started the restaurant recently and invited me to try it out.  As of this day, they're still experimenting with their menu and some of the menu items might be different than expected.  They have outside seating (which would be fantastic during winters), and also an inside seating upstairs. It has a very casual feel which I liked.  For our drinks, we started with a passion-fruit lemonade which was refreshing and I loved the seeds in it.  The other one was the blue curacao lemonade . It was partially like a slush. The taste was pretty good though.  For our starters, we had the dynamite soft shell crab . It was a bit salty, though the taste was good. If you like your sea-food crunchy, then this is a good option too. The dynamite sauce enhanced the taste.  They've got some tacos too; we chose the p...

BBQ delight - Ibn Batuta

Image
This place serves a la carte as well as buffet which is for AED 79. I was invited to try out the food here.  I chose the buffet since that's usually the choice for most of the people. The selection was not bad, though their other branch had more varieties.  We started with the mutton seekh and the chicken seekh kebab . Both were pretty good and well cooked.  The fried prawns and the fried fish tasted alright. The fish could have been a bit softer.  The chicken achari boti was pretty good, and so was the chicken malai tikka .  The mutton ribs were chewy and I didn't like them.  They got us some pani puri which was pretty good. The pani was a bit zestier than usual.  There was the papdi chaat too. The flavour was not bad, but the yoghurt was not mixed well. It was there mostly just on top, whereas the chaat felt a bit bit dry towards the end.  We had the fresh mango juice and the lemon mint ; both of which were rea...

Govinda's - Pure Vegetarian Indian restaurant

Image
This is a restaurant that not only is pure vegetarian but also does not use onion and garlic in the food at all. We started with a jal jeera for our drink which was cold and refreshing. It was made with some boondi in it. For starters, we had a unique chaat ; unfortunately I don't remember the name as it's been a while since I visited the place. It was something like a mini kachori in which they put some chutney and some kind of a gravy. It was unique and tasted delicious. For our mains, we ordered a veg tiranga which is a mix of three colours of gravies. A green, red, and brown. It was something really nice if you're unable to decide what to order and want a bit of each. The other main dish was the pindi chole . It had the right amount of masala in it, and were cooked well. We had this along with tandoori roti. I've been to this restaurants on other occasions earlier too and the food has always been nice. They've maintained the food qual...

Conestreet

Who doesn't love desserts, right? This is a gelato parlour located in JBR walk. They also serve some sorbets.  It is a small place, but I really liked it since the staff was courteous. Our server Lakshmi helped us with the flavours.  We had the special of the day - Nutella with mascarpone cheese . The two flavours together complemented  each other very well. It was not overly sweet; it was creamy. The other gelato that we had was a combination of two - the tiramisu and the caramelized bisquit . Tiramisu in the form of a gelato was something interesting and it tasted great. Along with that, the caramel tasted quite sweet. Overall, we enjoyed this one too.  We also had a sorbet - the s trawberry flavoured. Sometimes these simple flavours also don't fail to impress you. It was not overly sour and that's what I liked.  They also have some nuts to munch on, in case you've had a sweetness overload.  You can have some coffees here as well. I...

Wakame - Asian cuisine

Image
Wakame is a well-known Asian restaurant in town and this time around, they're having the "Asian Culture" festival where they are having a particular country every week where they serve dishes from this country (apart from the regular menu). I was invited to try out the Sri Lankan Cuisine.  Before this, I had had Sri Lankan food just once and it was a while ago, so was almost like the first time that I was trying out this cuisine.  I got to know that the owner of this restaurant shares a close relationship to Sri Lanka. Among other things, during his childhood days, he also had a nanny from here, and there is a dish named after her. More on that later.  As we waited for the mains to arrive, we munched on some Edamame . I think this was the only item from the regular menu that we had. They were hot and the flavour was perfect. It had the right amount of salt and seasoning to it.  I ordered the Gotukola Breeze which is a mocktail made from the gotukola lea...

Masti - contemporary Indian cuisine

Image
I had heard a lot about this place and so we went to try it out. This restaurant is for a niche audience. The serve contemporary cuisine here with an Indian hint to it. When we went there, they said the food is Indian, which it absolutely isn't, but it may have some Indian flavours or ingredients.  Whether you call it Indian or fusion or whatever you like, the dishes are really innovative. We started with the snow pea and shimeji bao . It looked quite appealing, and the taste was also pretty good. The sauces are served in little pipettes that you inject in the bao.  We came across another dish which is served with a black paste. I don't remember the exact name of this dish, but it was definitely delicious, and worth a shot.  Most of us Indians love chaat. They had a chaat made from a root - the cassava chaat . It has some sweet and sour sauces and some rocket leaves. It looked very simple but tasted fantastic. It also had some crisps on top. Since I'm no...
