Masti - contemporary Indian cuisine

I had heard a lot about this place and so we went to try it out. This restaurant is for a niche audience. The serve contemporary cuisine here with an Indian hint to it. When we went there, they said the food is Indian, which it absolutely isn't, but it may have some Indian flavours or ingredients.

Whether you call it Indian or fusion or whatever you like, the dishes are really innovative.

We started with the snow pea and shimeji bao. It looked quite appealing, and the taste was also pretty good. The sauces are served in little pipettes that you inject in the bao.

We came across another dish which is served with a black paste. I don't remember the exact name of this dish, but it was definitely delicious, and worth a shot.

Most of us Indians love chaat. They had a chaat made from a root - the cassava chaat. It has some sweet and sour sauces and some rocket leaves. It looked very simple but tasted fantastic. It also had some crisps on top. Since I'm not a big fan of uncommon roots, I was pleasantly surprised when I actually ended up liking this a lot.

Last, but not the least, we ordered the most widely loved dishes of India - the biryani - they call it the modern masti biryani. The flavours obviously weren't traditional, but then again, this is not the place you'd come for traditional flavours. It had some kale in it and wasn't so spicy overall. The flavour was good, but I think the starts had raised my expectations high, and so I was expecting more from this. nonetheless, it was quite good.

For our drinks (non-alcoholic), we had a Royal T. This one is a mix of a few teas with some fruity flavours - blossoming tea, apricot, darjeeling, chamomile, agave, citrus, and sparkling grape. It tastes somewhat like an ice-tea, but much better given the various flowery teas it has in it. It isn't overly sweet, and that what I liked the most. They first pour the cold citrus and sparkling grape, and it is then topped with warm teas.

The other drink was called high darling. If the name hasn't managed to get your attention, the contents surely will. It's got espresso, chai, vanilla, and jaggery and is topped with a marshmallow. Though this did not taste like anything that I've had before, it did have some Indian flavours. I was going crazy over this one, but my friend did not enjoy it all that much. I think you need to be a little adventurous to try this one out.

The have some seating upstairs too and that place gives you a lovely view of La Mer.

The ambience is dimly lit. It might get a bit noisy upstairs, but it is comparatively quiet downstairs.

Along the hallway, they have some art that looks Indian but definitely challenges your general idea about what an Indian painting would look like.

Overall, I really liked the flavours that this place has to offer, but the food is exorbitantly priced.
