Zahr-El-Laymoun - Souq Al Bahar

Image
This one is a classy place with a good location. Also, if you're sitting outside (which is where you can have the shisha), you get a partial view of the dubai fountains too. I was invited by them to try out their food, and the first thing I noticed was the ambience which was lovely.  They have a lot of modified dishes on their menu, i.e. dishes which you might get elsewhere but a little different.  We started with the Hummus Zahr-El-laymoun . It comes with minced meat, and is topped with pomegranate seeds and pine nuts. I totally loved this one. Minced meat on hummus tastes better than pieces of meat I must say; or perhaps it is the way they make it.  The manager suggested that we should definitely try the labneh tray . It is labneh covered with thyme, pistachio and olive oil; served with crispy bread. I took a bite of this and couldn't keep my hands off it. If you like labneh, you gotta try this one. For drinks we had the pomegranate juice . This wa...

Riso vegetarian Italian kitchen

Image
Riso has just opened in November 2017, and I got a chance to try out this Pure Vegetarian Italian restaurant. The interiors are colorful with bright blue, orange etc. for the furniture, and they've made it decorative with various kinds of flower pots. We started with a mushroom cappuccino . Yes, you read that right. This is basically a mushroom soup, served in a mug with some froth on top. The froth tastes really milky just like it would in a cappuccino, and the soup below the froth tasted really authentic. I definitely recommend this.  A post shared by Famished Explorer [ UDIT ] (@uditss) on Dec 6, 2017 at 11:50pm PST The other soup was " zuppa de pomodoro "; this is tomato soup with crunchy croutons. This also tasted really good.  Then came this mushroom starter (I sadly forgot the name). It is served with bread, and tasted nice initially, but after a few bites, it was just about okay. For appetizers there were the Jalapeno sticks . Really che...

Bombay Bungalow

This place was previously called the "house of curry", and now it has got a complete makeover. We were at JBR walk, and looking for an Indian restaurant. There aren't many choices so we ended up going here.  The ambiance inside is really nice. They've got a mini fountain inside, and some trees too, and especially the Indian Monalisa that caught my attention. The starters were really interesting. They were a fusion of sorts. After seeing " calamari bhel " in the menu, obviously I couldn't resist ordering. This one was really yum. The chutneys aren't as much as you'd expect in a bhel, and it is a bit dry, but taste is good nonetheless. Now I love paneer, and I'm a big fan of zaatar. Guess what I see on the menu next. The zaatar paneer tikka ! This one wasn't all that bad. The flavor of zaatar wasn't so prominent, and overall felt a bit bland, though the paneer was soft. I was expecting more from it. It is served with a tahi...

Going Social with Desserts

Image
I'm sure we've all seen Social House in Dubai mall and how inviting it looks. We decided to try out the desserts here. We went there late afternoon and there weren't too many people. You sat at a corner table overlooking the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai fountains.  The look and feel of this place is earthy. They've got trees inside and lots of use of wood with a golden / brown theme.  The service was a bit slow and it took a few minutes before they gave us a menu. The attentiveness of the staff in general could have been better.  They've got a separate menu for desserts and they've got quite a few interesting ones in there and it was a task to choose. We finally settled for the four below:  Mississippi mud pie : When I'm in the mood for something chocolatey but not too sweet, this would be my choice. This one was really amazing. It was a bit grainy and coarse and you could taste the chocolate, and at the same time not overly sweet. It comes wi...
