Riso vegetarian Italian kitchen
Riso has just opened in November 2017, and I got a chance to try out this Pure Vegetarian Italian restaurant. The interiors are colorful with bright blue, orange etc. for the furniture, and they've made it decorative with various kinds of flower pots.
We started with a mushroom cappuccino. Yes, you read that right. This is basically a mushroom soup, served in a mug with some froth on top. The froth tastes really milky just like it would in a cappuccino, and the soup below the froth tasted really authentic. I definitely recommend this.
The other soup was "zuppa de pomodoro"; this is tomato soup with crunchy croutons. This also tasted really good.
Then came this mushroom starter (I sadly forgot the name). It is served with bread, and tasted nice initially, but after a few bites, it was just about okay.
For appetizers there were the Jalapeno sticks. Really cheesy, and had a good crunch too; served with the thousand island dressing which further accentuated the taste.
We had the Contadina salad too. It contains tomato, garlic, basil, sun-dried tomato and beans and is served in a big wooden bowl. The presentation was on point and it tasted fresh, though not something extra-ordinary.
For drinks, we had the fizzy fizzy which is a kiwi crush with vanilla ice-cream, topped with soda. I liked the tang that it had to it as well as the fizziness.
Another one was a smoothie called the Princess. It is made from mix fruits and was really thick.
Looking for something to munch on while the mains were being prepared, we had the Spinachi. It is a creamy spinach dip served with crispy toast. It tasted alright; not something I'd recommend.
Most pizza places have just a couple of options in the vegetarian category, but this being a pure vegetarian restaurant, they've played around with a lot of different combinations. We had the fantasy pizza. It has a spicy tomato sauce base that is topped with onion, capsicum , cottage cheese and mozzarella. It was among the 'thin crust' category, and the crust was really thin and crispy; overall tasted really delicious.
A Mexican meal need nachos, so there you go, loaded nachos it was. Topped with a generous amount of cheese, beans, bell peppers and salsa. No doubt this tasted finger-licking good.
It had been a while since I had a good enchilada, so we tried out the 'Special Enchilada' which contains mushrooms, beans, corn capsicum, cottage cheese, and covered with cheese. This was served hot and we definitely loved it.
For those who need rice for their meal to be complete, worry not, they've got some great Risotto. The chef recommended their Special Risotto which contains tomato, pesto, and bechamel, broccoli, asparagus, zucchini, bell peppers, and herbs and spices. Doesn't it sound tempting already? Being a rice lover, I could barely keep my hands off it.
For dessert, we had the cheesecake. This was good, though it wasn't something I'd go gaga over.
Their staff, including the chef Kamal is from India, and he has been making vegetarian Italian food for about 10 years. Initially while ordering I noticed that the way the staff pronounced the names of the dishes was totally off the mark, and so I had my apprehensions, but given that the food quality, taste, and the presentation was almost perfect, I definitely overlooked that part. Also, I think the target audience that they cater to wouldn't care too much about this aspect either, as long as they get really good food.
The Italian word 'Riso' means laughter, and this place definitely put a smile on our face :)
