Mohalla - Indian casual upmarket diner

Image
I had heard  good things about this place and went here on the suggestion of a friend. The ambience is casual yet gives an upmarket feel to it.  The menu isn't extensive but they have some interesting items. We started with the poha crusted prawns . The name itself was so interesting. It looked nice when it was served and it was exactly what the name suggests - prawns that are coated with poha and are crispy. The texture was great and so was the taste. It was served with an orange chutney. I'm not the kind who'd generally have vada-pav at an upmarket restaurant; I prefer it at small roadside eateries, but on the suggestion of my friends, we ordered a vada-pav . It was actually good. It had chutney inside, and was served with chillies and some salad on the side.  The next starter that we had was the avocado papdi chaat . This was similar looking to sev-puri but with avocado in it. It was a bit too sweet for our liking. For my beverage, I had masala chaans and was nice and...

Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor - Vegan Review

Image
We were looking for a good Indian restaurant to go to that has Vegan options. My folks had recently started exploring Veganism (though have always been vegetarian) and wanted to go to a restaurant that caters to this dietary restriction. The restaurant has some vegan options and some other vegetarian dishes that can be made vegan on request.  Most of the below dishes are vegan or can be made vegan on request. We called the chef and he suggested us some dishes based on our preferences. They got us some papads to munch on with an assortment of delicious chutneys / dips.  After this, there was a palate cleanser called the vegetarian Egg Yolk. It only looked like a yolk but was actually a mango liquid inside a gelatinous ball that bursts in your mouth. For our soup, we had the tomato and basmati shorba . It had some pandan leaves in it that gave a nice flavour, and there was murmura (rice puffs) on which they poured the tomato broth. It was tangy, hot, and a bit spicy...

Asha's - Maryah Island

Image
Asha's is a well known chain of restaurants and they recently launched a new menu called Himachal to Ladakh that is there until the 26th of December 2019 across all their outlets.  We started with some refreshing mocktails. I liked the one which had chili and coconut in it. It was actually spicy, and if you want to try something different, this is a good choice.  Then came  the Thukpa soup which is originally a Nepali/Tibetan soup but they prepare it with their own touch to it. They add some red chilli, garam masala, and lemon to it. It has some noodles in it too, and all of this really brought about a very nice flavour to the soup. It had an Indian touch to it while still preserving the core Nepali taste.  Next were the Ladakhi dumplings . This were chicken dumplings that had a thick curry to it which was made from onion and tomato masala. I eat my dumplings with lot of sauce but the curry itself acted as a sauce which was really delicious.  We ...

Bhar - Renaissance Downtown

Image
This was perhaps the best iftar that I went to this season. Not only the food, but I really liked it overall too.  The view from here is just breath-taking. It's worth going here just for the view. You get a lovely view of the Dubai canal, and it felt so peaceful. Although, it was a bit hot in Ramadan, but they had a couple of coolers outside, so it wasn't that bad. It would be great during winters though.  They also had live music here.  We started with some lovely Ramadan juices.  I really liked the karkadi which was refreshing and not too sour. They also had qamar aldin, laban, and tamarind juice.  We then moved on to shawerma (which wasn't as a roll but as a plate on which you could put toppings as per your liking).  There were various types of breads, manakeesh, and fatayer.  The selection of cold starters was huge. Apart from the usual hummus, tabbouleh, fattoush, they also had haydari, labneh balls and more. The sala...

Vivaldi by Alfredo Russo

Image
This restaurant is  by celebrity chef Alfredo Russo and I was thrilled to be invited by a friend for a 4 course meal. The restaurant is located beside the creek and has a romantic feel to it. They have outdoor seating too which was pleasant during the good weather.  The other day, there was not one but four Michelin starred chefs who prepared the meals for us - Alfredo Russo, Silvia Baracchi, Enrico Gerli, Gaetano Simonato - and we also got to meet them later.  They got us some bread to start with as we waited for the food.  For the first course, we had Taleggio foam with truffle . It was a foamy truffle mushroom soup. It had the right consistency to it. The Taleggio cheese gave it a subtle thickness and the cheesy flavour to it. At the bottom of the mug, there was some mashed potato which was quite a pleasant surprise and I totally loved this dish overall.  This was prepared by chef Alfredo Russo .  Then we had the chicken liver praline ...
