State 88
State 88 has just opened about two months ago by two brothers who love sandwiches and wanted to create something unique.
They love the number '8', and it also happens to look like a rotated infinity sign - and that is the limit for their menu items - infinite. Their restaurant is based on a few values or what they call 'articles of constitution' just like a state would; and that's where the name comes from.
I got an invite from the restaurant and at first when I saw this place online, I though it's just another sandwich place, but the photos were tempting and they had some innovative items, which is why I was looking forward to it.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a waiter called James. He was friendly and showed us to a table.
The place is rustic, yet classy. It has interesting qoutations written everywhere.
They've got a good selection of sandwiches and also have salads, drinks and dessert.
We decided to start with a salad and a couple of drinks.
We chose the "crab me" salad. It looked very appealing. It had a lot of baby spinach, avocado, and mushrooms. In between all of that, the crab sticks felt lost somewhere. I felt there could have been some more amount of crab, or may be bigger pieces, as you can hardly get the flavor.
They also asked us if we'd like to try their sweet potato fries, so we did. They were good, but I think they might taste better with sauces like the sriracha which are served with sweet potato fries at many places.
I had seen some lovely photos of their drinks online and couldn't wait to try them out.
We asked for a nitro ice-tea and a lotus milkshake.
The lotus milkshake was delicious; rich and creamy; and it also gets filling.
The nitro ice-tea was good as an ice tea, but I could hardly notice anything "nitro" about it, though our waitress Jenna made great efforts to tell us how they put the nitro gas that leads to the bubbles and froth on the surface.
Now moving on to the sandwiches which is their specialization. All of them seemed interesting, and it was tough to make a choice. Finally, we settled on the Liberal and the Checkpoint 88.
The Liberal tasted superb with the pulled chicken in it. One bite, and you can barely stop. A very interesting thing about it is that I could get all the flavors of the individual fillings that were in it and it tasted delicious.
The CheckPoint 88 was good too, and I could taste more of the meat compared to the other stuffing inside.
The sandwiches are served with pickles on the side which complement the sandwich well.
We still had some place for a little bite, so we had their 'Avenue 88'. This one is a roll made using scrambled eggs, mozarella cheese, and the salsa stuff (pico de gallo). It tasted amazing. There's egg, there's cheese, there's salsa - what's not to love! A lovely combination.
Then we thought of trying out another one of their tempting drinks - the classic nitro cold brew. After seeing the pictures online, I was really looking forward to this one. This is something unique; and also something which not everyone would like. To put it simply, it is cold black coffee. I've developed a taste for this, and so I liked it, but my friend didn't like it at all. So if you want to have a cold black coffee, then you should go for it.
In their dessert section, I saw 'smoked cheesecake'. It sounded interesting, but sadly, it wasn't available. Instead, they said that the red velvet cake is available. So we asked for that one. This one wasn't bad, I mean a red velvet cake can't really get bad, but it wasn't somthing I'd recommend trying.
One thing that struck me about this place are their plates. They're blue, heavy, have a unique texture, and also have the name of the restaurant on it. I found them really intriguing, and it tells me about the attention to detail that this restaurant gives to everything.
