Tum Tum Asia - vegan review

My family has recently got into vegan food and we thought of trying some. Usually we end up at a vegetarian Indian restaurant which has a lot of vegan dishes, but this time we wanted to try out something different. Tum Tum Asia is one of the very few (or perhaps the only) vegetarian Asian restaurant that I know of, and majority of the items on the menu are available in vegan variants.
(P.S. Items on their menu with the vegan symbol can be made vegan on request and may not necessarily be vegan if you don't specify that).

We went there on a weekend, but since we went early (around 8pm), it wasn't crowded, although it was packed by the time we were done with our meal. They do cater to the Indian palate too, and I say this because they have a section in their menu called "Because Indian is Pan Asian" which does have a handful of Indian items.

All items in this review are Vegan.

We started with some refreshing drinks with some interesting names.
We ordered the Passionate balti. This is served in a small balti (bucket) and has peaches, cinnamon tea extract, basil, non-alcoholic wine, and orange peel. It was tangy and I really liked the spices in this one.

The other one was the Dubai mai tai which has jallab, orgeat extract, orange, kokum, and lime juice. They use syrups and it was a bit too sweet for my liking.

We started with a sushi - the flaming dragon. This is a type of nigiri with veg slaw and chilli silken tofu on it which is flamed with soya glaze. I really liked the flavours to this one, and the presentation was nice too.

Next we chose one of the dimsums - the Nepalese kothey. These dim sums are filled with soya and green onion and are pan-fried. These were delicious and tasted even better with the spicy chilli chutney/sauce on the side.

Their sizzlers definitely looked tempting, and we had the Oriental Medley. This has shichimi fried rice, bean hakka noodles and katsu veggies. The katsu veg patty had primarily potato in it, and was average. The noodles and the rice were good enough. I was expecting bigger patties or more vegetables in this dish.

The last item for the mains was the Malaysian Kari Sayur. This is a curry made with coconut milk and a few vegetables in it. This tasted delicious and comforting. It is served along with jala roti which is basically fried netted bread. It was something interesting and different although not very convenient to eat. We asked for some steamed rice on the side with this curry.

For the sweet endings, we had the mango with sticky rice which is a famous Thai dish. It has sticky rice with some coconut milk and fresh mango on the side. It tasted good, but I've had better.

It was a good experience overall. The staff is attentive though can be a bit friendlier. I liked the presentation of the items too (even the way they get the bill).
