Bait Maryam
If you're looking for a place with a nice artsy decor in JLT, then this is a great choice. The ambience feels cozy and is done up well. They also have outdoor seating. They invited me to try out their food.
We started with the Maryam Salad. This has rocca leaves, beetroot, yogurt, and lemon juice. I'm not much of a salad fan and when I saw this, it didn't appeal much to me, but I took a bite and it was pretty good. It may not be something that I'd order, but salad lovers and healthy eaters will surely enjoy this.
For appetisers, they recommended the cauliflower with tahina. It was my first time trying it out, and I really liked the taste of this one. The cauliflower had a bit of a smokey and burnt flavour of the crispy onions on top, and the combination with the creamy tahina was superb.
Batata hara is another classic Arabic starter that we had here, and it was served fresh and hot with a bit of a zesty hint to it.
For our drinks, we had the ayran (laban), and the maryam cocktail which was a mix of different fruit juices and taste really good.
Our mains included the fatet maryam musakhan. This consists of chicken topped with sumac, yogurt garlic, and fried bread. This tasted really comforting and I loved the bit of a crispy texture that it had.
The other variant of this is the fatet lahme with rice. This has rice topped with meat, yogurt, garlic, and fried bread. If you're a fan of rice and meat, you'll surely love this dish. The meat was soft and delicious, and the garlic yogurt surely added more taste to it.
For the sweet endings, we had halawet el jibn which are basically cheese rolls. These were not bad, but could have had a bit more flavour to it.
The other dessert was the mohalabieh which is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made from rice flour. This one was served warm and we loved it. It was the perfect ending to our meal.
We really enjoyed everything that we had here, and the ambience is good too.
