Roti Rollers

Seeing the name itself, you would have guessed that this is a desi place, with some kind of a twist. Well, their food items are healthier and very low on fat compared to the other desi restaurants. Also, they want to cater to the mid segment and want people to get a taste of desi food while maintaining a good nutrition level in the food.

It is located along the lagoon at La Mer. At the entrance, there is a rickshaw which looks catchy and gives the Indian feel to it.

The interiors are rustic yet colourful; and it does manage to look casual, yet a little bit upmarket at the same time.

They invited me to try out the restaurant, and as soon as I got there, I was greeted by their head chef - Sameer. He started by explaining us about the concept, with a special focus on the delicious in-house sauces that they make. They have over 15 sauces, and the best part is that they actually taste the way they're meant to be.

There are sauces like makhni, tikka masala, korma etc. and you can blindly tell what they are ; they taste so authentic. There are also the ones like the really spicy tomato and chilli sauce, and also the "rocket fuel" which is so spicy that they do not even have it in the menu, and it only available on special request. I did try it out and loved it, but if you aren't accustomed to having spicy, then this could get you in deep trouble...especially next morning ;-)
My favourite sauces were the spicy tomato and chilli, chimichurri, tikka, rocket fuel, and the garlic.

We started with their chaats. They have a mini cart for chaats, and got us items like the dahi puri, pani puri, sev puri in a tray. All of them tasted great. The puris were bigger than usual and had a generous amount of topping to it.

We started with their pav bhaji fondue. They make the bhaji without butter, and only add a small teaspoonful of it on top. Also, the pav is with parsley-garlic crusted which makes the pav itself delicious. The bhaji feels light when you're having it, yet flavourful.

For their rolls, we ordered their hot favourite which is called "up all night to get plucky". All of the rolls have funky names. This  one contains tikka chicken breast along with the tikka masala spread (one of the sauces which I told about earlier in this post), a few veggies, and is wrapped in an avocado roti. Reading this in their menu itself seemed mouth-watering. The taste definitely lived up to our expectations. It is served with roti crisps. This wrap won the "Best Wrap" award at the Dubai Food Festival.

The next roll that we had was the "Beauty and the beef". This is made from tandoori beef that is wrapped in beetroot roti, along with chimichurri sauce, mint chutney, and various spices. This one tasted heavenly. I think we liked this better than the previous one. This was flavourful, and a little spicy too.

Their rolls are made form wholewheat and are healthy. They also have the option to make it with avocado or beetroot. For those who are allergic to gluten, there is also an option to choose quinoa biryani as the base and make the roll into a bowl instead. They have a lot of vegetarian options on their menu, and also a vegan one.

You can have just the roll, or even make it a combo by adding a side dish and drinks. Among the sides, we tried their fries and the okra.
The french fries were crispy, and they are made using the Tamilian masala which is something different from regular fries.

For those who want to try a different kind of a side-dish, they have the smash fried okra. The okra is smashed, and is coated with breadcrumbs. This was crispy and tasted good, although not something I would eagerly look forward to.

Then we had another one of their street snacks - the Indie scotch eggs. This was my first time having scotch eggs. It consists of a hard-boiled egg wrapped in chicken. This had desi spices to it, and the taste was really very nice. It was a little dry for my liking though.

For drinks, we had the Kulfi Coffee. It is the kulfi in a liquid form and blended with coffee and some coconut extract. This was something you should definitely try. The combination tastes fantastic.

The minty lemonade was really refreshing. It wasn't overly tangy.

The mango lassi was served at the right temperature with the right consistency which is what made it more enjoyable.

They also have the Thumbs Up which is a famous soft-drink in India, and the Pakola which is a famous one in Pakistan.

For dessert, we had the Hershey's chocolate samosa. It was made fresh and was served pipping hot. Take a bite, and you'll fell the hot Hershey's chocolate lingering in your mouth. The samosa is thin which makes it an amazing combo.

The next one as the jalebi that is served with some rabdi. This one is an all-time-favourite combination. My friend liked this one more, whereas the chocolate samosa is what made me truly content.

And oh of-course, chai ! For any desi, this is a must. They have their chaiwala who gets the tea, and serves it in a small glass used for cutting chai in India. The tea is actually good and not like a few of the upmarket places which just present it well. This one feel comforting.
