Kulfiholic - The Mumbai Social

Kulfiholic, The Mumbai Social. These are actually two restaurants in one. It was a mystery to me as to why would they name it Kulfiholic when they serve so much more. That's when I came to know that the Kulfiholic is the kulfi part of it and "The Mumbai Social" is a concept which serves Mumbai street food.

As soon as you enter (or even from the outside actually), you'll see that they've given a very Mumbai-street-like feel to it. They've also incorporated the ambience of a local train.

The walls are filled with very well known sayings / quotations that every Mumbaite can relate to.

For the month of Ramadan, they have an Iftar set menu for just AED 41. This one includes one starter, one main course, one fresh lime soda, and one kulfi.

We were two bloggers and were invited to try out the dishes here. Most of the items that we had were from the Iftar menu, but there were a couple of them which weren't in the menu too.

We started with the "Dimaag ka dahi". As you can see, the names are really innovative and relatable to a Bombayite. This one is a dahi vada. The vadas were soft, and the curd was just right; not too sour or too sweet. It was served in a fancy black bowl.

The next item we had was the "Chakram Chole". It is chole bhature. I think this one was presented the best. Not that the other items don't look good; they certainly do, but this one was molecular gastronomy. The chole was served inside an old coal iron with smoke coming out from it, and the bhatura was served on a shovel. The presentation was great and so was the taste. It was topped with julienned ginger. Considering this was a starter, the quantity was generous, and this was quite filling.

Then we had the "Aye mamu soya kya". This is keema pav. Oh wait, vegetarian restaurant right? This is soya (tofu) pav. The flavour and the consistency of this one was so good that while eating I had forgotten that it was a vegetarian restaurant. It tasted just like the real thing.

The other main that we had was the "Taka tak pulav". This is tawa pulav. Served on a little stand, tilted. There's raita under it. Great taste, and also really good quantity. It's hard to go wrong with this one.

One of the dishes that they really suggested us to try (not from the Iftar menu) was the Firangi Puri. I can loosely define this as an Italian version of pani puri, or maybe pizza in a puri. The puri is stuffed with cheese, corn, capsicum, peas, cheese. And did I say cheese? Yeah, there's a lot of cheese. So cheese lovers will really go crazy on this one!

The lime soda was served in a shoe. This one was perhaps one of the best lime sodas I've had. It is such a simple drink, but they made it taste brilliant. It had some masala in it, and was zesty in the right proportions.

To end on a sweet not, we had their paan kulfi. This really tasted like paan, and it was served with rabdi on the side. It also had the right texture to it, and was the perfect way to end our meal.
