Hitchki - contemporary fusion with a nostalgia
This is a restaurant which re-launched in Dubai recently. The interiors are classy, though dimly lit. They've tried to give the dishes a very nostalgic feel by naming them based on famous Bollywood movies / dialogues; at the same time, the dishes themselves are contemporary fusion.
This is a pure vegetarian review.
We started with the masala khichia papad. It is just like the masala papad but khichia (thicker and made from rice flour) is used instead of the regular papad. It's nice to munch on.
They have some interesting flavours for laban. I tried the chili wasabi laban. It was really spicy, and despite it being yoghurt, the wasabi does give you quite the kick. Since I love wasabi, I really liked it. Although, this is something I would like to have only once in a blue moon.
We wanted some momos, and couldn't resist after seeing the name "mere tandoori momo aayenge". These are charcoal smoked and were also served in the traditional momo container with a smokey charcoal and were really flavourful. One the side was peanut sauce, and a mint chutney.
Another interesting fusion was the pav bhaji burger. It has a vegetable tikki inside as well as some 'bhaji", and is put in a bun. The burger also had the hitchki branding. This was the most delicious dish for me personally. Enjoyed every bite of it. Do note that it was a tad bit oily.
The last dish was the dum pukht arancini. The word "dum pukht" is usually associated with biryani, and that's what they done here. They've taken biryani and made it into balls served with a crisp on top. I found the taste to be just average, and in an attempt to get the best of both, it ends of being best of neither.
Some other dish names from the menu that caught my attention: all izz bhel, aao kabhi dabeli pe, thalaiva, tumse na ho payega, amar akbar anthony, nav ratan dhan payo, dimaag ka dahi, skewer ke bacchon, mere paas maa hai, aamrish puri, kuch bhi (yes, they've got a dish by that name for those who are never able to decide).
Also, when they got the bill, the box said "main aaj bhi pheke hua paise nahi uthata".
I really liked the overall experience, and given the decor, the prices are also reasonable. For all the above (and a big bottle of water), we paid AED 187.
