Sagar Ratna - authentic Rajasthani cuisine

If you're looking for a vegetarian restaurant that serves Rajasthani cuisine, you are looking at one of the best options. This restaurant has two outlets - Oud Metha and JLT - and they invited me to try out their food.

Don't let the name mislead you into thinking that it is a restaurant serving some other Indian cuisine. It is an authentic Rajasthani restaurant; the owner, the chef, and the management too are from Jodhpur. The good thing about this restaurant is that they serve much more than the cliched dishes like dal baati (they have that too, but much more). They have dishes which have a Rajasthani flavour to it, and these might even be kebabs or mains.
They also have jain options available.

The first thing we had was a refreshing lassi. It is the makhaniya lassi, i.e. with makhhan (clarified butter); it is not overly sweet, so it feels really nice to have.

Then we had some traditional Rajasthani snacks. First one was the mirchi bada (vada). This is made by coating a chilli in batter and frying it. It also has stuffing inside it. This made for a wonderful snack with some really good flavour to it. To make this dish a big chilli is used, which isn't as spicy as the regular one.

Then we had the pyaaz kachori which is another classic Rajasthani snack. I really liked the taste as well as texture of this one. It had ample amount of filling inside, and tasted really good with the chutneys. Definitely try this one.

For the starters, we had the Mehrangarh Kebab platter. This is a sizzling platter of mixed kebabs. It contains: Paneer Angaar, Bharwan Aloo, Seekh Kebab, Hara Bhara Kebab, Tandoori Gobhi, Malai Paneer.
The Paneer Angaar was delicious as the paneer was really soft (which they make in-house and also sell separately). The bharwan aloo was also really very good with a spicy and yummy filling.
The hara bhara kebabs had the right amount of spice to it. The sizzler was smokey which made it even more enjoyable.

For the mains, their star item was the Dhungar Paneer tikka masala. This is panner tikka made Rajasthani style. This is served on a sizzling platter, and has a bit of a tangy and spicy semi-dry gravy to it. I definitely recommend trying out this one.

Another one of their specials is the smokey dal makhani. We all love dal makhani and adding some smoke to it makes it even better. I found the smokey flavour a bit subtle though, but it was really buttery (makhani).

A marwadi speciality is the gatte ka saag. The good part is that the besan (gram flour) dumplings were cooked properly and the curry that it was made in was something that made us want to keep having it.

We had these with their jadi buti naan. It is a naan with their secret spices and is just perfect with the Rajasthani mains. We also had their hot phulkas with ghee which feel so homely.

We were so full by now, but the meal would have been incomplete without some traditional sweet. What better than the ghevar which is one of the most famous dessert here. They go one step further and serve the ghevar with rabdi on top. If you're already salivating reading this, let me telly ou that the taste really lives up to it as well.

This is not just another vegetarian restaurant but a pure Rajasthani place. They also serve dishes like ker sangri, rabodi, jodhpuri haldi ki sabzi and lots of other traditional items.

Also, it might look like the food is oily, but it is actually pure ghee which they use, and it is key in giving it the authentic flavour that the food here has.

Khamma Ghani 🙏
