Yugo Sushi

There are so many sushi places coming up lately, but what makes this different is that it is a Yugo concept. Yugo in Japanese means Fusion. The food is Japanese and tastes so too, but they've tweaked it a bit, and I was glad to be invited to try it out.

The first item we had was the Yellowtail usuzukuri. Usuzukuri refers to thinly sliced, and the yellowtail was so thinly slice that it was transparent just the way the Japanese do it. It has a slice of jalapeno on top which gives a hint of spice to it. This is made using their zesty in-house sauce and they can do it since it is a Yugo concept. We totally loved this and is certainly worth a try.

Then we had the Salmon Avocado usuzukuri which apparently is one of their hot sellers. Now I'm not all that big a fan of avocado, though I like salmon. This was good, and this too was in their secret sauce. The way it was presented, it looked fantastic. We liked it just a little bit I would say.

We then got a crunchy crab-stick salad. This one also had zoodles, tobiko, mango, and green beans. The different ingredients in this one complement each other well, and despite me not being a big fan of fruits in my food, I really liked this one.

Wasabi prawn is what we got on our table next. It's really hard to go wrong with this one. Prawns are one of my favourite and who doesn't like that spicy wasabi sting up your nose. Ok, this doesn't have a sting as such, but yes, the wasabi does make the prawns taste fantastic.

A craze that has almost become a classic now is the bang bang shrimp. Shrimps in a cocktail glass with a spicy sauce.  These are crispy and taste really good.

If you are a bit adventurous and don't mind trying out something new, there's the shashimi tako yugo style. In case you're wondering, this has nothing to do with tacos. Tako in Japanese means octopus, and shashimi is basically raw, so you can do the math. Initial reactions are bound to be that of apprehension, but keep those aside, and take a bite. It does taste really good. Also, since they use their zesty sauce to make it, it is somewhat cured / marinated like a ceviche. Certainly worth a try at something new.

Next up was the nigiri unagi - cooked (they also have the raw variant). For those who are sushi lovers know what's unagi, and I totally liked this one. It was a change from the raw ones. For those who don't know what's unagi, it is eel; and no, it isn't what you are imagining right now. It looks just like any other fish when used in sushi!

For those who want the salmon instead, there's this option available too (cooked as well as raw). The nigiri salmon also tasted quite nice.

Then we had the salmon kick roll. It is salmon above sticky rice, and this one didn't taste too bad either.

For those who're a fan of avocado, you'll surely like this uramaki - the tropical roll which has avocado in it!

Another famous sushi is the volcanic roll. This one has crab along with a spicy sauce, and is topped with tobiko as well. This one was well presented, and didn't taste bad, but I think I've had better.

Here comes another creation with wasabi. The wasabi tempura roll. This tastes really fresh and flavourful.

The next one is for those who like spicy. It is their spiciest item - the Tuna T. To balance the spice level, they also add some sweet seaweed to it. It is delicious and kinda crunchy. The tastes are well balanced with a spicy after-taste that is left in your mouth. Shannon, their staff member recommends this and it is her favourite dish here. She is friendly and attentive, and serves you with a smile :) She also explained us all the dishes very well.

If you're looking for something a bit different, try the Salt and Pepper Calamari. It's got the spiciness of the pepper and crispiness of the fried calamari. Though it was good by itself, it was sort of a misfit compared to the rest of the items here.

For the drinks, the midori fruit punch is quite refreshing and has a mix of fruity flavours with a passion fruit base.

My favourite was the sake. It's a non-alcoholic version and they've made it into a mocktail. It does not have a burst of flavours or it isn't very fruity, but has a mild flavour just the kind I wanted.

One of their signatures is the yugo mocktail. This has berrylicious flavours and is ice-blended which isn't much to my liking. If you like something really cold, then this would do the trick.

To end on a sweet note, thy serve some interesting flavours of gelato too. The ones that we tried were: strawberry black-pepper, passion fruit, chocolate with red chilli, green tea matcha, vanilla valencia. The last three were really good. The chocolate has slight tones of chilli and is certainly worth a try. The matcha is not overpowering, and that's the good part.

I like the yugo (fusion) concept overall. Interesting items, quality food, reasonable prices.
