Benjarong - Dusit Thani

Benjarong is an award winning thai restaurant located on the 24th level in Dusit Thani. Not only does it serve amazing Thai food, but this one also has a fantastic view. The interiors are classy, and there is also live instrumental music being played.

I was invited by this restaurant, and was excited to be there.
We were spoilt for choice. We went in the first week of September and they had a special menu that had some additional items apart from the usual too.

We started off with some drinks and a salad - an interesting one - the green papaya salad with blue crab. This was something out of the box. The waiter asked if we were okay with spicy; we were. Now this was something unusual for a salad. When served, we saw that it had chopped chili in it and it really brought about the flavor well. It also had tiny shrimp in it.

The drinks we had with it were: lemongrass tea, and a Thai mango juice. The lemongrass tea had a mild flavor and a good taste. The Thai mango juice was really fresh.

As there was so much choice for the appetizers, we decided to order the Khong Wang Ruammit Benjarong. This contains assorted appetizers. It has got a fish cake which was good, vegetable spring roll which was great, a shrimp parcel that is crispy and looks cute, a rice cracker, and a chicken pandanus which was my favorite among all. It is marinated, wrapped in a banana leaf and cooked. It was a bit hard, but tasted the best.

Then we ordered some more drinks. A tamarind juice - which also tasted great. A little bit tangy and a little bit sweet. It gave a feeling like we were having freshly plucked tamarind.
I had a Thai ice tea. This one was more milky than ones usually served and was chilled, so it tasted really good. This was my favorite among the drink I'd say.

For the mains we had a Goong Phad Nam Prig Pao. This dish is made of stir-fried battered prawns with onion, bell peppers and roasted chili paste. The prawns were huge and with every bite we could get the taste of the spices and condiments used in it.

We also had some duck - the Ped Yang Phad Bai Kraprao. It is stir-fried duck in chili and basil. It was well roasted and we could get a very good smell as soon as it was served.

Along with that, we had stir fried egg noodles with chicken. It was a delight to find that the noodles had a lot of vegetables in it and not just for name sake. I think this was the best dish among all of them.

Now moving on to sweet endings we had a Tap Tim Krob, i.e. Ruby water chestnuts in coconut milk. At first bite we didn't quite like it much; after a few bites it tasted a little better but not something quite to our liking.

Another item that we had was the Khong Wan Benjarong which is assorted Thai desserts. This contained a type of sweet thai beans, a dish made from flour and sugar in three different shapes which was okay, a thai jelly that was crisp (Yes, crisp) from the outside and soft from the inside, and a dessert made from sago, coconut, and tapioca for which we hadn't quite developed a taste.

This place also has a private majlis-like seating which has sliding doors and an amazing view. So if you're a group of people and want some privacy this is a a good section to sit in.

I would like to give special mention to this waiter by the name of "David". His service was impeccable. Right from the time he started taking our order, he was very down to earth and explained the dishes really well. I also asked him if he was from Thailand; he wasn't. He was from Myanmar, and he actually went on to briefly explain the similarities and differences in the cuisines from Myanmar and Thailand.

A fantastic experience.
