Kaftan Turkish cuisine and fine art
A Kaftan is a robe worn by the Kurds, and this restaurant has the same name. It is located opposite the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. They've got valet parking, and that was the first thing that I noticed here. They have outside seating as well as inside. This particular day they had some painting going on inside, and so we couldn't sit there, but I'm guessing it would be available to sit on all other days, and it is beautiful.
The outside seating where we sat was also very nice. It is green and they have lots of trees, and you can also get a god view of the Burj-Al-Arab, so if the weather permits, it is a good option to sit outside. This particular day, it was a bit windy too.
They got a few Turkish breads and dips before we ordered for our food.
We started with Karides Tava which are sauteed rock shrimps. It was very well presented, and tasted a tad bit tangy. We really liked it, and it was over in no time.
Another starter was the Cigkofte. These are bulghur patties with herbs and spicy pastes. The description looked like it is something different and so we ordered it. It turned out to be different indeed. Not exactly to our liking. I think you will have to really develop a liking for it, otherwise you might not like it.
Pide is a Turkish dish which is very similar to manae'esh. We had the Kiymali Pide which consists of minced meat with tomato and different spices. This one was thin and hot, and also had Kashkaval cheese on it. We really loved it.
For drinks we had the virgin peach daiquiri which tasted even better than it looked. It really got me hooked on to it.
We also had the lemonade with mint. Most of the place have almost the same taste, but this one wasn't as sour and you could have it without feeling the tang on your taste-buds. Later we had another one of this.
Now coming to the mains, we had the Kuzu Beyti. This is lamb meat in the form of a roll. We asked for it to be well-done. It was softer than I expected, and a bit crispy from the edges. I definitely recommend this. It is served long with potatoes and char-grilled asparagus wrapped in smoked red pepper.
The other dish we had was the Kaftan Manti. This is a filo dough pastry that has minced meat inside it. It had a topping of yoghurt-garlic sauce which goes with it very well. I can say it is a softer version of the sambousek, and much more flavorful. It tasted amazing.
Before we could order the dessert, they also got us some tea after a heavy meal.
I had seen their Bal Kaymek dessert online and I really wanted to try it out. It is a honeycomb, along with cream on the side. It looked really amazing. One bite of it, and it felt extremely sweet, but after it has lingered in your mouth for a while, the sweetness totally disappears, and it becomes chewy and tasteless. It was a disappointment.
There were two pistachio based desserts on the menu. We asked the waiter as to which one is better and he recommended the Pasa Kadayif. This is made by baking filo dough strands that are filled with crushed pistachio. This looked truly marvelous, especially since they partially make it in front of you. I couldn't wait to try it out. After taking one bite, it didn't feel all that great. It wasn't too sweet. It also had ice-cream in it and I thought that this might make it better, but the ice-cream was made form goat milk and I wasn't accustomed to the taste, and it made it all the more worse.

There was the other of the two pistachio desserts and the waiter hadn't recommended that but I had heard a lot about it from my friends, so I ordered that with some apprehensions. This one though was amazing. It it called the Simit Katmer. This is also made from filo dough; it is rolled with Turkish pistachios and filled with cream and pistachio spread. This was sweet, but just sweet enough so that it would keep crazing you for more. Don't leave the place without trying this out.
The waiter Martin who was serving us did a good job, and the staff overall was polite and courteous.
