Red Tomato Pizza
Right from the moment you enter, it gives a very European feel to it. They've got some seating outside too, and despite the restaurant being on the main road, the outside seating still feels cozy and well-tucked in.
You'll see them making the pizzas in the furnace right in front of you.
As we ordered, and waited, they gave us some foccacia bread to munch on. This was soft and buttery.
Interestingly, they've got quite a lot of options in vegetarian too.
We started with the bruschetta al pesto. The bread is baked in a wood oven, and has a generous amount of mozarella cheese in it, along with their home made pesto sauce. This tasted a bit dry.
For the soup, we had the Minestra di Fagioli which was a vegetarian soup. It had beans, vegetables, and tagliatelle pasta in it. There was more to eat in the soup than drink. I liked it as a dish; if you want to try something different from a traditional soup, you can try this one out.
Another starter was the Gamberoni Arrosto. These are tiger prawns roasted in olive oil, garlic, chili, and herbs. I liked the fact that I could taste more of the prawns with just enough flavour to it so that it doesn't taste bland. The spices did not over-power it, but complemented it well.
For the drinks, we had the Passion fruit Mojito which was my favourite here. Had a lovely taste with those crunchy seeds in it.
The forest berry smoothie was nice and thick too, and we could taste the berries with a little bit of a tang.
Now coming to their specialty which is the pizza. They have over a dozen choices in vegetarian alone! Isn't that amazing?! We had the 'Pesto' pizza. This was a vegetarian white pizaa (i.e., it does not have a tomato base). It had sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, roasted zuccini, roasted eggplant, and pesto sauce, along with the mozarella.
This pizza was different from the ones I've mostly had. The base was really thin and crispy, and the vegetables were cut a little bigger than most palces. If you want to try something out of the ordinary, you'll definitely like this.
For the pasta, we had the fusilli Primavera which is again a vegetarian one. This is made in a light creamy sauce and has carrots, green beans, onion and broccoli in it. I liked the fact that it had a lot of vegetables in it. We also liked the taste overall.
We were looking for a good dessert in the menu. They have three desserts; two of which are lava cakes - a black one and a white one - both listed as chef's special. We ordered the black one. This was a little harder than what I've usually had. It tasted alright, but I was expecting better. Also, it had too many nuts in it.
We also had a tiramisu. This was really huge. It contains their home-made biscuits and mascarpone. It looked really tempting, but tasted just about okay. This one too had nuts in it, and that felt out of place. I'm not sure if this is the traditional way that they do it in Italy, but this is not what I have in mind when I'm looking for a tiramisu.
You won't be doing justice to a traditional Italian place if you leave without coffee, right? We had a cappuccino. It was served in a large cup, and was on point.
Now coming to the service experience where I would like to mention a particular incident. We ordered some water (room temperature) as soon as we sat. It was almost ten minutes and they hadn't yet got the water. I called the waiter, and when I was just about to ask him as to what happened about the water, a customer from the other table called, and the waiter went there. He went to do whatever he had to fetch for the other customer and came after a couple of minutes. Once he came back, I enquired about the water, and he said that is it coming. I was puzzled as to what's taking that long for water. After another couple of minutes, he got the water; cold. So after making me wait for long and ignoring me while I was initially enquiring about what's taking so long, he got the wrong water. Got me really pissed. After that the service was pretty decent, and one of the staff also came and told us about the history of the restaurant. The damage was done though.
