Tabule - Roda Al Murooj

Tabule is a restaurant located in Roda al Murooj, and you guessed it right...it is an Arabic restaurant, since it shares its name with a famous Levantine salad.

It has indoor as well as outdoor seating, and as the weather was pleasant, we chose the latter. I like their use of small white lights which gives the place a calm feel.

They welcomed us with a refreshing orange-based drink in a lovely glass.

We started with the usual Arabic cold starters. Of-course we couldn't miss the tabouleh. They have three types of this, and the waiter recommended the one with avocado. I haven't seen any other place that makes this with avocado, and what's even better is that this particular tabouleh is made right at your table! It can't get any more fresher than this. He made it right in front of us. Starting with parsley, moving onto mint, tomatoes, bulghur, lemon juice, pomegranate juice, et al, and last but not the least - avocado. This one tasted really fresh, and if you're a fan of avocado you're really going to relish this one.

We also had the moutabel and the hummus which was good. It had a creamy consistency to it, and served along with the fresh hot breads, it tasted nice.

I also liked the shanklish a lot. It was not too salty like many other places make it. Also, it was a tad bit moist, and I really enjoyed having this one.

The wine leaves tasted really fresh. The rice in it could have had a little more flavour though.

They have some really nice drinks; alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic.
I had the mocktail called "love bite". It was fruity, and a little milky too like a pinacolada. It felt really refreshing, and smooth.

They have Arak which is a Levantine alcoholic spirit. It is anise based. Some people like it neat, while some like it with water. Neat was too strong for us, so we mixed some water in it. It becomes a little cloudy on mixing with water, but mellows down a bit and tastes good.

They've also got a good selection of wines that you'd like if you're a connoisseur.

For hot starters, we had the fried kibbeh. This was one of the best kibbeh I've had. It was crispy from outside, and soft from inside. The meat also had a very good consistency to it. You need to have it hot as soon as it is served, otherwise the taste dwindles.

There was also the evergreen favourite, batata hara (hot potato). This was a bit tangier than usual, but had a good flavour nonetheless.

We had some spinach fattayer too. This looked good, but tasted just about okay, and wasn't quite to my liking.

The manakesh though was great. It was meaty and also had a nice crispiness to it. It was on point, and didn't need any sauces/dips to enhance the flavour.

There was also sojouk, which is basically an Arabic sausage. These weren't bad, were a bit more lemony than expected. They could have been better.

For mains, we had kofta. It was a bit grainy, and the texture didn't feel quite right; though it wasn't bad to taste.

One of our favourite was this chicken in white sauce. It was creamy & cheesy flavour to it that made it almost irresistible. The chicken was succulent and was really well cooked.

We were almost stuffed by now, but had to try the grills. We had some lamb chops which were juicy, and the chicken kebabs too were flavorful. This was served with rice and french fries on the side.

To satisfy our sweet tooth, we called for some cheese kunafa. It looked amazing, but after having a bite, it didn't quite live up to it; as it wasn't all that cheesy. It doesn't quite feel like a good kunafa if you can't stretch out that cheese.

Next we had a chocolate brownie. I liked the way it tasted, but the texture for this one wasn't something that appealed to us. It was a bit dry & dry, and had too many nuts in it. Though the mint ice-cream that it was served along with, was nice.

The one that we really liked was the "Tabule Special" dessert. It is candy floss on a bed of ice-cream. This was something new and we really enjoyed it. The ice-cream was indulgent and extra-creamy. The candy floss was topped with pistachios which further added flavour to it.

A special mention to our server Karim who was really friendly, and made our visit memorable. Do ask for him when you visit.
