Hook and Cook - Seafood
The name itself got me hooked on to this place and when they invited me to try it out I was really looking forward to it.
They have some seating outside, but once you go inside the interiors take you to a whole different level. With make-shift boats and fishing nets dotting the place, you feel like the restaurant is right beside the sea; this gives a feeling that the seafood is really fresh. Now the good part is that the food is actually fresh since they did not store the food items for long and have a very short turnaround time.
I like the theme and the blue colours that they have used here, along with a lot of use of wood, which gives the place a feeling that you are right in the sea.
For a refreshing start, we had mocktails. I really liked the Sangria which had a lot of fresh fruits in it. The other mocktails too were great.
We started with the soup which was the seafood bisque. The seafood in this was really soft and cooked to perfection and the broth itself also was really flavorful. Since it did not have too many spices, the core of flavour of the seafood was retained. The garlic bread served with it was extremely delicious.
Then they got us some fried shrimp along with tartar sauce. These were nice and crispy and we really liked them. What's not to like about shrimp.
There was also fried calamari along with marinara sauce. The calamari was nice but I think the marinara sauce being a bit too tangy, overpowered the taste of the calamari.
Another famous starter that we're seeing these days is the dynamite shrimp or the bang bang which is basically shrimp in a spicy sauce and that's what we had here. This one was not bad but little crispier and a bit different than what we're used to having at most places.
Then we had some crab cakes which looked really tempting. This this was a bit too "crabby" for me; it would be great for crab lovers though since it does not have too many spices and the core flavour of the crab meat is retained.
They got us some fish tacos too and frankly I did not have much expectations about it initially, but surpassed my expectations. The fish inside was really crispy and overall the taco was yum; also, the sour cream along with it added a lot of flavour to it.
For the mains, we started with the paella. This is a dish which not all restaurants get right but they sure did. Whether it was the prawns or the mussels or the rice itself, all of it was made to perfection. Although the prawns were not de-shelled, they were a breeze to get through.
I'm not a big fan of mussels, and perhaps this could have been because I never had the right ones. The muscles were made in cream sauce which tasted just like the sauce of a pasta and obviously I loved it. They also had muscles in the marinara sauce as well. These were good too but I like the former ones better.
If you're a seafood lover you must definitely like crab, and the next dish that they brought us was one of the specialities of Singapore which is the Chilli crab. This one tasted just like it does in Singapore; it was irresistible. The tanginess that the chilli sauce had was just right to complement the crab meat.
Also they gave us plastic gloves and an apron to wear so that you don't have to worry about things getting messy.
Just when I thought things couldn't get better, we had the crab in black pepper sauce. This has got me totally hooked on to the crab; it might get a tad bit spicy for some though.
I am a big fan of the Hamour fish especially since it is served boneless. They had made a butter curry out of this which was just like butter chicken but reddish-brown in colour. The fish was extremely soft; it was almost melting in the mouth.
Before we moved on to the desserts they got us some sorbets as the palate cleanser. My favourite was the lemon one.
The first one was the lava cake. There wasn't as much lava in it as expected, but there taste was quite good.
Continuing the tangy flavors from the mains, we had a lemon cheesecake. This was nice and creamy, and really zesty.
The Apple pie was served hot and that was the best part about it. We actually had to wait for a few minutes for it to cool down before we could have it. The tastes was okay.
The best though, was the dates pudding. It was served with ice-cream. It was warm and gooey.
For a place whose speciality is seafood, I must say, the desserts are better than expected.
