Freedom Pizza - healthy and vegan options
Healthy. Pizza. It's hard to imagine these two words together right? Well, now you can. This is one place which has focused a lot on what goes in their food. It is not only the pizzas which have healthier ingredients (compared to other pizza places), but also their salads, sandwiches, and desserts. They are especially focused on vegan too!
This outlet is in Sharjah and the location would mostly be suited for a takeaway, since the seating is very limited too. I was recently invited here to try out their delicious food.
I've colour coded the savoury menu items: red for the ones that contain meat, and green for the ones that do not contain meat. Items that are vegan, are specifically marked.
We started with a few of their salads. Now, just like me, if you aren't much of a "leafy" person, this is one salad which will still appeal to you.
It is called the skinny Mexican; contains quinoa, mexi-sauce, sweet corn, mixed pepper, coriander, cheddar, chicken, crispy tortilla. This one has 414 calories. It tasted as if I had come to a Mexican restaurant. This one is healthy and tastes delicious.
Next, we had the edamame salad; contains kale, baby spinach, edamame, mint, spring onion, goat cheese. This one has 207 calories. This one not only tastes, but also looks very healthy.
It is served with lemon and honey dressing on the side; this has 137 calories.
The next one is a more traditional salad and is called the superfoods salad ; (vegan) it contains baby spinach, basil, rocket leaves, kale, spring onion, purple bell pepper, purple cabbage, sweet cherry tomatoes, dried cranberries, almonds, pumpkin seeds. This one has 111 calories. What makes it different is the dressing that we had with it - a raspberry and black pepper vinaigrette dressing (vegan) (has 136 calories). The dressing sounded a bit weird, but tastes delicious, and brings out very contrasting flavours.
Last but not the least was the BR lean in salad - (Bespoke ride inspired workout fuel); it contains quinoa, beetroot, chicken, caramelised onion, goat cheese, dried cranberry, parsley, almond; it has 446 calories. I found this one to be just about average.
They've got some sandwiches too, and we tried a couple of them.
Vegan tartina sandwich - (vegan); contains vegan meat loaf, sun-dried tomatoes, cooked mushroom, parsley , lettuce, mexi-sauce. The "meat" is just a chunk of vegetables that is vegan friendly. It tasted really good.
Tender lovin sandwich - chicken tenders, purple and white cabbage, red pepper, cilantro, lettuce, honey mustard sauce. The dressing really brought about the flavour. Both of these are healthy too.
After the wait, now come the pizzas.
Mother earth; this contains artichoke, spinach, mixed bell pepper, mushroom, garlic, onion, cilantro. If you're an artichoke fan, you'll definitely like this. This has a bit of a healthy taste to it.
Free-gan; (vegan) contains red sauce, orange bell pepper, jalapeno, cherry tomato, onion, caramelised onion, coriander, vegan cheese. I definitely liked this one. It had mild sweetish taste to it and a lovely flavour overall.
Saatchi; contains buffalo red sauce, buffalo chicken, pimento chilli, onion, cream cheese, cheddar, Mozzarella. As you must have guessed, this is spicy, and it was my favourite one here. If you like spicy, then this one is definitely for you.
Beetnik; contains organic beetroot, spring onion, fennel, parsley, thyme, caramelised onion, goat cheese, truffle oil. This was one pizza which I did not enjoy much. It came across as a bit too sweet for my taste-buds, and a bit too healthy for my liking.
The Roma; contains artichoke, sun-dried tomato, mixed bell pepper, black olive, mushroom. This one was pretty good, and I especially liked the sun-dried tomatoes in it.
They have some really nice desserts, some of which are vegan too.
I hadn't had an ice-cream sandwich in a while, so when they gave us the matcha mint chip ice-cream sandwich (vegan), I was thrilled. For those who like matcha, you'll definitely like this since it contains a strong matcha (green tea) flavour.
For the health conscious, there are the gluten-free brownies. Though they might not look very appealing, these tasted very good indeed.
They have cheesecake that is vegan. This came as quite a surprise to me. It is available in strawberry, mango and salted caramel. Frankly, I did not like the flavour of this too much, and if you aren't vegan, you can avoid this.
For banana lovers, there is also the rawsome banoffee which is vegan and sort of a cheesecake. Not being much of a banana fan, it wasn't something I would enjoy.
Chocolate Chip cookies. These are delicious and crispy; not as soft as the ones you'd usually have, but taste nice.
I really liked the fact that they've focused so much on organic, vegan, gluten-free...and generally healthy dietary options. Most of their ingredients are locally sourced and they visit their suppliers and check the produce themselves.
They recently had a campaign promoting safety for their delivery bikers. Their bikers have more protective gear than the mandatory requirement. Also, they've put a picture of their family member on their helmet, so when the biker wears it, they remember their loved ones, and remember to ride safely.
