Moombai & Co.
A modern Parsi Cafe and Bar in an upmarket location, is how I can describe it best. Once you enter you will get a feel like you are entering a 1970's Parsi cafe in Mumbai. I also liked the kind of songs they were playing - Remixes of old bollywood songs, and some golden oldies too.
They've started with their Saturday brunch recently and I was invited for this one. Right from the drinks itself you get a feel of Mumbai since they have the local offerings that you'd get in a typical Parsi cafe in Mumbai. They started by giving us some cutting chai. Well, of-course that's definitely a part of the traditional Indian breakfast. Along with that there was lassi too which was served in a classy black glass, and was totally yummy; and a chandan ka pani (sandalwood water) which was unique, but the taste was average.
For breakfast, you'd have items consisting of paratha and egg, so that's what we had. There was the keema & paratha topped with sev (crispies). The keema was delicious and served hot. The paratha with this had egg inside, and that made it finger-licking good.
We also had the aloo paratha which wasn't bad; served with curd and pickle.
Not to forget the masala omelette which was flavorful, served with a piece of bun-maska, and potato wedges sprinkled with their secret in-house spices that tasted fantastic.
They have invented this item called the "Moombai & Co. Egg" which is naan with moong dal salad, avocado sour, baked with eggs. It wasn't bad but not exactly to my liking. The individual items tasted good, but as a combination it felt a bit out of place.
For health freaks there was also Muesli. It is made with yoghurt, banana, a few other fruits, and topped with honey. My friend who likes healthy food, liked it; I gave it a pass.
You cannot have an Indian breakfast without the most famous item - Poha. This one had the homemade taste to it, and was served hot, with a slice of lemon on the side.
After having a heavy breakfast, we didn't have place for the main at all. There was this tandoori item on the menu which caught our attention after reading its description - the tandoori salad. It consists of sliced pineapple, pear, and bell-peppers that are marinated overnight and charred in over. There is a hint of chaat masala and lime on it. This was really out of the box. We could get the char-grilled flavor to it, which was too good. It tasted a tad bit sour though and I felt it's pricey.
There was a "surprise" dish from the chef waiting for us after this; two dishes actually.
One of them was a kachori chaat of sorts. This one had filling of potato inside, and was worth every bite. Topped with curd, and chutneys giving it a very good taste. Another one was a moong dal chaat. It had a typical Indian taste to it; contained onions and spices, and topped with pomegranate. It is very filling too.
An Indian meal cannot be complete without Indian dessert, so we called for a kulfi platter. This is served along with fresh cut fruits, over ice. There are two kulfis in it - mango and strawberry. The kulfis weren't bad, but I could taste more of icicles in it. Also, according to me not at all worth the price.
A famous street food item to beat the heat? Bring it on. The kala khatta ice gola it was. A lovely flavor of kala khatta topped with some tangy spices. Worth a try.
Overall I liked the feel of this place, and the ambiance. Ishwar was the staff member who was serving us, and was courteous; so were all the staff members too; polite and serve you with a smile.
