El Mostacho

I'm a fan of good Mexican food, and a friend of mine invited me here to try them out. This is a really small place; some might find it homely, some might find it cramped. They have some really nice Mexican dishes which have a traditional flavour to it.

The name of the dishes too are in Spanish, with an explanation in English of-course. They also have a little sign beside it indicating the kind of meat that it contains.

While we waited for our food, we munched on some guacamole and chips which was really good, and the avocado tasted fresh too.

We started with the Sopa which is a Tortilla soup made from slow fried tomato, chicken stock, and tortilla strips.. The flavour was nice, but the texture felt a bit weird. For me personally, the tortilla felt out of place in a soup.

Tacos are what the Mexicans specialize in, and of-course you cannot leave this place without trying a few of these. The tacos have more of a homely feel and taste to it, and aren't too fancy.

The first one was the tinga de pollo. This contains shredded chicken, pickled red onion and cilantro. It was my first time having it with chicken that's shredded and it felt different, in a good way. The pickled onions did add to the flavour. The meat felt really juicy.

Then they got the Barbacoa which is slow cooked and shredded beef along with white onions and cilantro. This too felt juicy and flavourful too.

For vegetarians, they've got one option among the tacos - the hongos con maiz. This one has marinated portobello, charred sweet corn, avocado, pimento peppers, smokey chipotle yoghurt. The flavours weren't bad but it wasn't something to my liking. It didn't exactly feel like Mexican food to me.

The one that I really liked a lot and was pleasantly surprised to see was the baja pescado which is a baja style fish taco that also had shredded cabbage and carrot, along with chipotle mayo. The fish was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Along with the mayo, this tasted delicious.

We also had a vegetale burrito which - you must have guessed from the name - is a vegetarian burrito. It has got some slow cooked pinto beans, avocado, Mexican rice. This wasn't bad but could have been better.

For the dessert we had chocolate flan (a chocolate cake with flan on top) which was good enough.

I found the place quite small though, and the chairs and tables were high (like bar chairs) which didn't make the whole experience very good. I think the place is suited only for takeaways. Also, as you must have noticed from my review, it is best to avoid the vegetarian options.
