Samosa - a complete meal at Yalla Samosa
What is a samosa for you?
For most desis, it is a street-side snack, traditionally with a potato filling inside it.
This restaurant in JLT decided to modify it a bit and give you loads of options.
I was really looking forward to seeing what they've got to offer me when they invited me to try them out.
First and foremost, they've made their samosa like a complete meal instead of just a little snack. They've achieved this by making the size bigger. Their samosa is about 4 times in volume as compared to a regular one. It might take a while for people like me to accept this as a proper meal, although, it's not that difficult since the filling inside their samosas is unique.
They have about half a dozen options in savoury and about the same number in sweet.
Their savoury samosas are served along with potato wedges, and fresh salad veggies on the side. They have the Indian flavours too, but I wanted to try something different, so I chose the Mac n' Cheese as the filling for my samosa. I took a bite, and I was definitely liking the Mac n' Cheese inside it. We felt like there should have been a bit more salt to it though, but pretty good nonetheless. The samosa had a good texture and was crispy enough from the outside which I really admire.
The potato wedges also were hot and delicious.
Now let's come to their sweet samosa. But oh, before that... Let me tell you about their star item - the 24 karat gold plated samosa! Yes, you read that right. They actually have this; you can choose a sweet or a savoury filling for this one as per your choice.
We choose the Nutella crunch as our filling for the Gold plated samosa. Now let me tell you that this isn't just a gold plated samosa but an experience in itself. It is served in a gold plate along with gold cutlery! Since we were having the Nutella samosa, we also got marshmallows, ice-cream, sweet popcorn, and caramel & chocolate sauce with it.
The filling is made with crunchy hazelnuts smothered with Nutella. When we cut it open, it flowed out just a little bit; it was thick. If you're a Nutella fan, you're sure to love this one. Despite me not having much of a sweet tooth, I could barely resist it.
I would suggest ordering this only if there are 2-3 people to have it, as the quantity and the sweetness gets a bit too much to handle. It's a good thing that they also serve ice-cream and sugar dusted popcorn with it so that you can change your flavour intermittently.
The 24 karat gold plated samosa is priced at AED 125, and is obviously available only for dine-in.
They have a very nice lunch time offer. You can choose one samosa (not the gold plated one) along with fries / wedges, a salad, and a drink for just AED 26.
The same offer is also available for dinner, and is priced at AED 35.
They also make jalebis and gulab jamuns which they gave me to try out, and I must say that these were really delicious. The gulab jamuns were soft and sweet while the jalebis were crispy. They have the yellow jalebis as well as the orange ones.
If you're looking for bulk orders, they do have attractive price for those too. In this, the samosas are just about the regular size as you would get elsewhere. Compared to their flagship samosas, you can say these are mini samosas.
You get 25 of these samosas that are priced between AED 50 to 70 for the savoury ones, and between 70 to 90 for the sweet ones.
We tried the samosa with the chana masala filling and I must say it was really nice. It gave similar flavours of having chana masala with puri since basically that's what it is made of; albeit a different texture.
We had some fresh juices here too - a watermelon, and a pomegranate. The pomegranate looked pinkish which was awkward, but both of the juices were refreshing and had the expected taste.
This place isn't very big, and just a casual diner. One thing is for sure though - they want to change the way people see saomsas.
